Banter Mural Project
This was a project I did starting from August 2025 and is currently ongoing. I was involved in developing the ideas and concepts, creating sketches and draft illustrations, sourcing supplies, and painting the final mural.
In August 2025, my manager approached me about painting a 17’x8’ blank wall in our break room. There was really no inital plan, I was just told told to paint whatever I wanted (lol).
As the only person really on this project, I was responsible for developing the ideas and concepts, creating sketches and draft illustrations, sourcing supplies, and painting the final mural. From the start during the planning stage, I aimed to maintain consistency with the store’s visual identity by using vibrant colours and incorporating natural elements that reflect both the company and the store environment.
Although this was my second mural, it was the first one I executed entirely on my own, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the extensive planning required for large-scale work. I also learned how initial sketches do not always translate cleanly to a full wall, which often times requires rethinking the design and redoing sketches.
Here are some photos of the painting process!
While sketching and designing, I tried to separate each component into different layers so I could paint one layer each painting session, just to split up the work in a more time efficient manner.
Planning
Initially, two different designs were considered, but the first design was ultimately discarded because it proved too complex and visually overwhelming, and would have been difficult to execute on a wall that is 17’x8’ big. When I was first approached with the project, I began sketching ideas based solely on what I thought would look visually appealing and whatever we thought looked cool off of Pinterest, as there was very little direction at the time since this was a random idea for a project. However, upon finishing the first design, I realized it did not align well with the brand. I decided to start again with a more intentional approach, focusing on the company’s marketing colours and incorporating brand motifs, such as plants. I had planned to create additional concept designs in this new direction, but we ultimately selected the second design as our favourite, so we stuck with that one!
this is what the mural currently looks like!
